Our founder, Bill Coats, devoted more than 60 years to exploring aloe’s potential. His pioneering work spanned skincare, personal care, and agriculture, building a legacy that continues to inspire everything we do.

BILL'S STORY
Our Founder, Bill Coats
August 8, 1930 – August 31, 2023
Bill Coats dedicated his life to discovering what aloe vera could offer the world. A Texas native, Marine, pharmacist, and entrepreneur, he combined scientific curiosity with a lifelong determination to preserve the plant’s remarkable qualities.
After serving in the United States Marine Corps, Bill earned his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Texas at Austin. He opened a pharmacy, but his curiosity soon led him beyond the prescription counter. He became fascinated by aloe vera, and by the challenge of preserving its delicate gel after harvesting and exposure to air.
That challenge became a defining pursuit. In 1968, Bill achieved a breakthrough in aloe processing, developing a patented hand-filleting method. He founded Aloe Vera of America, Inc., bringing his research into consumer skincare and personal care products.
In 1974, Bill established a commercial aloe vera plantation in Texas. His research also extended into agriculture, where he developed patented approaches to using aloe vera in agricultural products.
Following Forever Living Products’ acquisition of Aloe Vera of America in 1981, Bill remained with the business for six years before founding Coats Aloe, Inc. There, he continued refining his methods and developed a patented whole leaf process designed to capture more of the aloe plant’s naturally occurring components. His work supported both Coats-branded products and formulations for other companies.
Over more than six decades, Bill helped shape the aloe vera industry through research, invention, and an enduring belief in the value of the plant.
Bill passed away on August 31, 2023, at the age of 93. His passing marked the end of an extraordinary life, but his work continues through the people, products, and businesses he inspired.
