BILL'S STORY
Whole Leaf Aloe was founded by Texas native Bill Coats, who joined the Marines after high school before going on to graduate from the University of Texas in Austin with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. From the beginning, Bill had a keen interest in the benefits of aloe vera, as well as the challenges of keeping it stabilized to prevent loss of activity in the gel when it was exposed to oxygen.
After opening a pharmacy, Bill continued his research into the 7000-year-old problem of stabilizing this magical plant’s properties. Finally cracking the code in 1968, he obtained a patent for his hand filet method of processing before launching Aloe Vera of America Inc. to produce cosmetics and pharmaceutical consumer products.
In 1974, Bill formed the first aloe vera plantation in Texas to commercially grow his beloved plants, soon developing another patent to produce aloe vera-based agricultural products. By 1981, Forever Living Products purchased Aloe Vera of America for $10 million, with Bill staying on for six years until starting Coats Aloe Inc. Under Coats Aloe, he developed a whole leaf patent to capture more active aloe plant properties while selling cosmetics and pharmaceutical lines under the Coats label and to major brands such as Herbal Life Inc. and L’oreal via private labeling.
